The South
From TANA you drive by car through the mountainous highlands,
passing by the red Merina clay houses.
On the road side, you may want to stop and buy local products, from fruits and vegetables to wooden toys.
Your first stop is ANTSIRABE. You can visit interesting handicraft centers and go on a sightseeing tour across the town by "Pousse-Pousse" (Riksha).
The next day you continue through the beautiful landscape
with its colourful rice fields.
In AMBOSITRA
you may buy some of the wonderful regional woodcarvings.
After an overnight stay in FIANARANTSOA you visit the production of the
ANTAIMORO paper in AMBALAVAO and enjoy passing near the
ANDRINGITRA mountain range - or, if time allows - spend
a few days trekking there.
Now you leave the central highlands and drive through wide savanna to
the well-known rocky mountains of ISALO.
A several-days
trekking will show you the bizarre forms carved by thousands
of years of erosion, many plants and various lemur
species.
The final stage of your journey drives you through the wild south. Left
and right you can see the huge, colourful Mahafaly graves.
Within a relaxing one-day drive you reach TOLIARA (Tuléar), from where you can fly back to Tana or take a rest at the beautiful beach of IFATY.
